Vodafone again. Boy, they must really want iPhone.
In a previous post I talked about how Vodafone seemed to be talking iPhone down. Now there’s a fresh rumour, from an un-named source, that suggests Vodafone has a list of things Apple must do so Vodafone will sell it. As if.
Just for a laugh, let’s go through the list:
- Vodafone wants the YouTube application to “work much more like the Internet version.” Umm, which means what, exactly? Both versions show videos. Or did you mean something else when you said “work”?
- Improvements to Outlook and Exchange support. Actually, iPhone supports IMAP, the best mail protocol. Exchange can be configured to use IMAP, so it’s a tech support issue, not an iPhone issue. As John Gruber points out, Apple will never license Exchange technology.
- Improved security and firewalls. Why? What’s wrong with the existing security?
- Tweaks to Apple’s WEP and WPA security key requirements. Tweaks? Tweaks??
- Web browser improvements, namely, the ability to simply cut and paste. Yes, Apple are going to completely change the way their phone works, to please Vodafone. Because there aren’t three other networks waiting to sign up.
Actually, I think this entire story was made up by engadget so they could have another iPhone story that links to all their other, mostly bullshit, iPhone stories. Either that, or Vodafone are completely desperate to get iPhone.
Anyway, here’s my take: in addition to the demands that Apple are making to all the other networks, they want Vodafone to change their name to Vodaphone, so it goes better with iPhone. Hey, I can make this stuff up too!

Sure, everyone wants 3G on iPhone, but it’s unlikely Apple will change iPhone before the UK launch. But I suppose we can hope!
