UK iPhone

There’s an unconfirmed claim that someone in the UK bought an iPhone on eBay, then took it to his local Vodafone store, where staff helped him to reprogram a prepaid AT&T SIM so that it would work on the Vodafone network. If true, it might indicate that Vodafone are already set up to work with the iPhone: but it seems very unlikely to be true, according to those with the knowledge, and also because, these days, how hard would it be to take a pic with a digital camera of the phone with the Voda operator ID? It seems like a hoax.
