AT&T Results Cast Doubt on iPhone Sales
AT&T, the network that has the exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the US, has reported that it activated only 146,000 iPhones in the last two days of its second quarter (the only two days of the quarter during which iPhone was available). This is well down on analysts’ estimates of 500,000 to 700,000 iPhones sold in the opening weekend. Apple’s share price has fallen on the news.
This may be premature, however. AT&T can only report activations, not the total number of iPhones sold. And there were reports of activation glitches due to the large numbers of iPhones sold on that weekend. Add in the people who didn’t activate right away, because they bought phones as gifts, or because they bought two, hoping to resell one, and the true sales figure is likely much higher.
In any event, Apple will almost certainly give that figure when it announces its quarterly results tonight.
